In this show, Fingers 2011 Graduating Students Award winner Kvetoslava Flora is further developing her relationship with newspaper as her source of interest. While past works have been concerned with the material and its physical possibilities, in this new body of work Flora looks at its personal meaning for her and its relationship to ideas of individuality, uniformity, the information given and information taken, the change which comes with every day and the correlation between each day in one country and another.
Practically, this has meant collecting newspapers from the different countries where they have been written and printed so that they keep their originality and the feeling of their origin. The painterly effect created on the surface of the pieces is based purely on the kind of newspaper being used and each piece is constructed exclusively from the papers of one specific country in order to imprint its individuality in the 'visual texture' which is unique to that country. Flora unifies them all through the specific and recognizable shape of the butterfly which she has chosen for its symbolic meaning and because the butterfly shares similarities in fate with newspaper in both its lifespan and fragility.
In 2012 Flora won the Danner Prize and she is currently continuing her jewellery studies at the Academie der Bildenden Künste
in Munich, Germany while continuing to exhibit her work both nationally and internationally.
"I had to stop and reflect..... and then I had to do it."
