Maca Bernal
Chilean born jeweller Macarena Bernal has been a resident in New Zealand since 2012 and a NZ citizen since 2018. Maca gained a Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Arts from Finis Terrae University in Santiago. Once in New Zealand she completed a contemporary Jewellery diploma at M.I.T. and went on to gain a MVA from the Otago Polytechnic, Dunedin School of Arts. Maca is best known for her Maca Link range which she began in 2015. The multi coloured links are made from pigmented polymers and textiles and can be formed together in many ways to make a dynamic range of necklaces and bangles. All Maca Links are designed to be interchangeable, interlinking with each other by slotting one into the next one. The entire range of Maca Links, including Maca Links Bangles and cords are fully compatible with each other.

The first of these necklaces I made during last Lockdown, for the Kauri Museum. I was reflecting on the concerning life cycle of Kauri Trees. This Lockdown I reconstituted more Kauri Gum into more beads, this time concerned about my own life cycle.

Rom is the name I gave a material I invented to capture and express my ideas in the form of contemporary jewellery. Rom sits at the core of a speculative narrative I generated about preservation of information, which purports to signify a new form of value in which jewellery made from Rom could be considered 'wearable forms of archiving'.
