"What I find really fascinating, and one of the reasons why it’s so interesting to make jewellery, is the moment of recognition when something that comes across as cute and pretty, has on second glimpse an almost obscene grotesqueness. I would say this quality probably works best in jewellery, where politeness and cold-blooded anger can clash mercilessly into one another."
"Working with wax allows you to be very spontaneous. I don’t have to make a sketch. If I have an idea I pretty much make it and it sits there, and I look at it later and see if it’s good. Sometimes I know they’re instantly good but some of them… there’s boxes, 10 years old, where I’m not quite sure if they will make it or not."
"I enjoy making, and I know that some rings have to be done very quickly. One moment, a ring wants to look a certain way, and the next, it wants to look like something quite different. Sometimes it even freaks out, is unruly, out of control. Sometimes a ring plays a joke on me, or it sits at the table like a good child, doing nothing......The ring can’t wait; it’s impatient and wants to hurry being ready for a finger. Of course the ring wants to be beautiful. The technique also wants to be beautiful, and most often it’s the idea that wants to be the most beautiful. But sometimes a ring likes nothing better than to sit in the mud and not give a damn about how it looks. If it’s exactly what it wants to be in a given moment, it is precise, perfect and the most beautiful."
Karl originally intended to study woodcarving but missed the application deadline so was encouraged to apply to a jewellery school. He trained as a goldsmith at the Goldschmiedeschule Pforzheim and worked for a jeweller before attending the Akademie der Bildenden Künste, München between 1987 and 1994, studying under Hermann Junger and Otto Kunzli. In 2006 Karl received the prestigious Françoise van den Bosch Award.
