Portal Neck Pieces in Murrine Cane - 2022
The Portal neck pieces were born from an intimate relationship with material, process, aesthetic and the conceptual departure from earlier jewellery works.
The detail created in the (glass) murine cane draws the eye into the work in mesmerising fashion making these statement works tell a story of taste and glass history.
The tube encompasses breathe, inside/outside space and can be worn nestled within the natural curves of the body. A play with shape, scale, length of suspension delivers a broad scope for individual taste, body shape and personal attraction to colour and detail. The hand sewn, soft, silk sash nestles easily under any garment with no protruding fastening points, these neck pieces can be easily layered between dress and dress jacket.
Methodology:
The glass elements are blown by Ruth Allen in her Melbourne hot glass studio. Colours are chosen, layered and pulled into canes. These long lengths of glass are then cut and placed on the cross section in a tile form to expose intricate patterning.
The tile is heated in the hot shop, squeezed to fuse the pieces together and then rolled up on a blow pipe. Now the canes can be reheated and fused entirely as well as curved slightly to sit nicely on the body.
Once the forms have cooled slowly the shapes are cut, ground and polished using specialised cold working equipment. The surface has been carved in a scallop pattern on a lathe using diamond wheels, this is an Italian process called 'Battuto'.
The presentation sash is hand sewed tubes of silk.

‘A Vulgar Show of Wealth’ was made for my show ‘Accoutrements for the Entitled’ at Anna Miles Gallery in 2007.
‘Accoutrements..’ inserted myself (as Cook & Co) into the world of born royalty; questioning the need to ‘win’ such objects as trophies or mayoral chains when you could just buy it. Among these illusions/delusions of grandeur ‘A Vulgar Show of Wealth’ puts the classic solitaire engagement ring to shame by its scale. If size of a stone (even a pure acrylic one) is proof of love, we have a winner- especially if you buy it for yourself!

From the series "MATTER over mind"
As the title of this exhibition suggests and not to be confused with the better known quote by geologist Sir Charles Lyell, the matter was the driving force. Its physical substance, function and form led the way.
My father's coin collection and other metal objects were found after my parents' house burned down in 2016. He was a collector of many wonderful things, which of many are lost. However, he shared with me the love of objects and the stories they tell.
Later that year my father passed away, leaving me with a tin of coins and other curiosities, all destroyed by the fire and worthless to most. The lives of these objects are long and mostly unknown, they have occupied varied spaces and travelled to countless places.
I soon saw the beauty in the charred patinas on the surfaces and tried to capture the oxidation by rolling the coins between paper through the rolling mill, a common tool in most jewellery workshops, which is used to draw down metal sheet or wire. Each time the metal was reheated, rolled with more pressure, the round shape was further distorted and left behind a different colour palette on the paper.
This led me down a rabbit hole. I became obsessed with the delicate, delightful results on paper and started investigating and documenting the surfaces through printing. Not thinking ahead, about the end result, I let the material speak to me, and with intuitive subtle interventions, a natural narrative occurred where intent and randomness collide. The paper prints record the process from the original state to a wearable object.
I'd like to think of Dad as stoked, to see the outcome of his collection, destroyed by fire and through our collective grief of losing beloved 'stuff' I attempt to give them a new lease of life compressed with layers of new meanings.

Mohua wood collection - Men's rings
Made with remnants of an adobe earth house build, from native timbers milled decades ago these rings venerate the subtle characteristics of wood. The experience of living with a closer connection to nature, her rhythms, cycles and patterns both visually and energetically, are inspiration for this ongoing line of enquiry in working with this living material.
The sensation of the tactile nature of this material can be both surprising and reassuring; soft, warm, smooth, light, and naturally melding into the human form.

These works/pieces are a further exploration of creating 'stone like' materials from which to make forms. Glass has a history of being used to imitate precious stones and as a stone carver I relish the opportunity to further this exploration.
The glass used in these pieces is a finite source that cannot be repeated or purchased. It is from a small amount of material I made in California in 1995 and is very rare.
