Living Symbolically and Some Bamboo
Making new work for this exhibition came during a time of disruption which started when we all went into lockdown, like a blackout. Staying at home we travelled symbolically, read library ebooks, and got quite musical at times. These humble black earrings suggest it all ... the bamboo is just something completely different.

The Tubular Necklace was born from an intimate relationship with material, process, aesthetic and the conceptual departure from earlier jewellery works. I am interested in minimising, streamlining and simplifying. The tube encompasses breathe, inside/outside space and can be worn nestled within the natural curves of the body. A play with shape, scale, length of suspension delivers a broad scope for individual taste, body shape and personal attraction to colour and detail. [When experiencing these works on the body the wearer will note that any predominantly clear necklace will absorb the colour of dress, scarf or coat; frosted glass has a beautiful capacity to absorb and emanate colours from it’s surroundings.]
The Tubular Glass Necklace is first made by pulling a tube in the hot shop. The tube can be created as a clear or coloured tube and can be/or not be decorated with additional coloured cane stripes for detail. To add the detail of coloured cane to the tube, further solid canes of colour are pulled, cut and picked up during the hot process surrounding the clear or coloured tube. Once these aesthetic decisions are made and the tube pulled they are annealed or cooled down slowly to temper the glass for their second hot process. At room temperature the tubes are cut into lengths and each end ground with edges bevelled, these are then picked up in the hot shop a second time and hot manipulated. The pieces are formed into subtle curves or fluid spirals, it takes a skilled and careful hand to carefully melt the tip and not close the tube. These are then annealed. The tubes are heated for a third and final time on the flameworking torch to beautifully round each end and complete the form. These are then annealed. Finally, at room temperature the tubes are sandblasted to give a satin finish and allow the forms to absorb and emit light rather than reflect it. The 100% cotton chord has been hand-plaited by Ruth and a flameworked borosilicate toggle formed to complete the piece for safe fastening.

In this time of global chaos I want to make jewellery to soothe. These worry beads guide the hand to a repetitive calming movement that follow the rhythms of nature. The total number of worry beads in a necklace usually equals a prime number (multiples of 4 +1). Here each group of 4 marks one year, depicting the equinox and solstice through the dark/light circadian rhythm.

#NUMBERED – The Kauri Collection
Earlier this year I accepted an invitation to produce a body of work using Kauri wood and gum for an exhibition at the NZ Kauri Museum. I am forever grateful to have participated in that exhibition as working with these extremely beautiful New Zealand heritage materials prove to be a new source of inspiration.
My aim at any given time is to enhance and showcase the intrinsic beauty in the materials I work with, and to challenge myself to find different fabricating techniques.
The titles for my jewellery are a sequential number of their position in the weeks, during lockdown, of experimental hand building all the original one-off art works.

From Valdivostock with love
Vladivostok always was a magical place I often fantasised about since my early childhood and longed to visit one day. In 2018 my dream came true and I spent 3 months in this thrilling city in the far east of Russia. To the North of the city lies a small beach in the Ussuri Bay, where after the closure of the local porcelain factory from the Soviet era, the waste and empty glass bottles washed up to the shore after being tumbled and pounded through the tidal action. Being an avid beachcomber, I could hardly believe my eyes at the amount of treasure lying on this beautiful stretch of coast and I started picking up porcelain things with holes, whilst my local Russian friends told me stories of family members who had worked in the factory a long time ago. Although we can no longer move around this crazy planet at the moment, we are free to wonder in our minds and go places we dream about or know intimately, and memories come alive.

Frog Brooches
These four endangered New Zealand native frogs/pepeketua are primitive and ancient creatures that have changed little in the last 70 million years. They differ from other frogs in that they do not have eardrums and they do not croak, they are silent and elusive creature. They also do not have a swimming tadpole stage and carry their froglets on their backs until fully developed. Fossil records show that these frogs used to be widely spread throughout NZ.
Through habitat loss, predation and disease they are now only found in isolated pockets around New Zealand. Archey’s are found in the Coromandel and Whareorino Forest, they in particular are in decline because of an introduced fungus called amphibian chytrid fungus. Hochstetter's has the largest distribution and are found at about ten sights in the upper North Island, these include Waipu, Coromandel and Raukumara Ranges. Maud Island Frogs are found on Maud Islands in the Marlborough Sounds (some have been translocated to Motuara Is). Hamilton's frog is the rarest with only approximately 300 living on Stephens Island in the Cook Strait. Frogs have very sensitive skin and are venerable to climate change and pollution, NZ frog populations have declined considerably in the last 25 years.

More News From Nowhere, necklace, 2016, Gold (9ct), thread $2,500
I initially saw a music video by Nick Cave called "More news from nowhere". He’s influenced by William Morris's book "News from Nowhere" published in 1890, however I didn't realise this at the time. I made associations with the overload and development of news entertainment. And now today four years after I made this necklace - fake news and conspiracy theories.
Earrings, 2016, Gold (9ct), fossilised shark teeth $1,500

Necklace, 2016, Wood, lacquer, thread $3,670
Dan Arps the NZ artist found this painted chicken on a farm gate and posted it on Instagram. The flames are from an element in one of the German painter Berthold Reiss’s paintings. I think a child painted the third piece. When I first finished this necklace four years ago I hated it, too childlike and colourful, at a time perhaps when my colours were getting darker. I never exhibited it and it’s only now I think it’s good. I saw a video by the musician Benee recently and her style, aesthetic, fashion reminded me of this necklace.
