Unitec Department of Design & Visual Arts 2011 Graduating Students Award RecipientYang Zhang
'Loops'
"Yang is a maker of beautiful and truly weird objects that are a declaration of delightful and refreshing left field thinking. She would keep surprising us with her intense and intelligent exploration of materials and ideas directed by a peculiar and confident aesthetic. We thoroughly enjoyed entering her very messy studio space to witness yet another charming adventure in how to successfully amalgamate fragile garlic sheath, broken egg shell, filth of the floor and any other odd and unexpected material into a visually and conceptually engaging piece of jewellery. Yang was our alchemist. Long may she enchant."
Ilse-Marie Erl, Unitec Jewellery Department tutor
"I reuse my waste to create jewellery whose form is in loops. Through investigation of my rubbish and social experience, my work expresses that my living conditions and everything around me is in loops. They keep changing and developing by combining and recombining."
