Effervescence Neck Pieces
The Effervescence series was born from an intimate relationship with material, process, aesthetic and the conceptual departure from earlier jewellery works.
I am interested in minimising, streamlining and simplifying.
The bubble textured tube encompasses breathe, inside/outside space and can be worn nestled within the natural curves of the body.
A play with shape, scale, length of suspension delivers a broad scope for individual taste, body shape and personal attraction to detail.
[When experiencing these works on the body the wearer will note that the glass and captured bubbles will absorb light and colour. This quality allows the work to respond to daily changes of worn textiles such as the colour of dress, shirt or blouse. The crushed silk velvet loop suspending the glass element is soft on the skin and assimilates easily with daily/evening dress. The glass can be moved and re-positioned upon the velvet loop responding to the mood of the wearer and their choice in attire, making this piece extremely agile to the moment.]
Tubular Necklace Methodology
The Tubular Glass Necklace is first made by pulling a tube in the hot shop. The tube can be created as a clear or coloured tube and can be/or not be decorated with additional coloured cane stripes for detail.
To add the detail of coloured cane to the tube, further solid canes of colour are pulled, cut and picked up during the hot process surrounding the clear or coloured tube.
Once these aesthetic decisions are made and the tube pulled they are annealed or cooled down slowly to temper the glass for their second hot process.
At room temperature the tubes are cut into lengths and each end ground with edges bevelled, these are then picked up in the hot shop a second time and hot manipulated. The pieces are formed into subtle curves or fluid spirals, it takes a skilled and careful hand to carefully melt the tip and not close the tube. These are then annealed.
The tubes are heated for a third and final time on the flame working torch to beautifully round each end and complete the form. These are then annealed.
Finally, at room temperature the tubes are sandblasted to give a satin finish and allow the forms to absorb and emit light rather than reflect it. The 100% cotton chord has been hand-plaited by RUTH and a flame worked borosilicate toggle formed to complete the piece for safe fastening

With clipped wings for everyone I decided on an inward holiday floating around wild lotus blooms.
This small journey started with gems custom cut here in New Zealand. In adoration of them and wetlands blooming it started to feel I was pushing too hard attempting to imitate natures beauty. Stepping back and thinking of the wilder, messier vista- lotus opening to the sun, closing to the dark, yielding in tranquil calm and with wind tearing at the petals was equally beautiful. This liberation led to freer pieces.

In 2020 I did a year-long course in permaculture which promotes a holistic, living-in-harmony-with-nature worldview. I now constantly question how I can make my practice more environmentally sustainable. As a maker I am interested in the life of all the materials I use, where they come from and where they end up.
These two works are the start of a new direction. They are made from muka and dyed using natural dyes sourced from plants. Both the muka and plants for dying are all sourced within a 15-minute walk from my home.

In his practice Matthew McIntyre-Wilson frequently re-envisages customary Maori taonga (treasures) in contemporary materials and designs, but with Muka Face Mask, 2020 he does the reverse. Now imbued with highly contemporary significance, the surgical facemask here is reframed within the visual language of customary Maori adornment. Responding to the recent global pandemic events of Covid-19, in which personal protection is now essential, the artist applies his weaving knowledge and technical expertise making facemasks out of muka fibre. In doing so, he symbolically invests the mask with the protective qualities traditionally associated with kaitaka and pake (cloaks). Carefully crafted from natural materials and made for longevity, Muka Face Mask is the opposite of the item it references, raising questions about how we perceive and interact with objects in daily life and their relationship to past, present and future.

This collection consists of tensile, extremely light in weight, elegant structures which I created from refurbished gold and Pounamu.
Mindful of dwindling resources, together with the high ecological cost of mining gold, I consciously challenged myself to minimise my use of materials in creating these durable pieces without sacrificing design.
The titles reflect the weight of each piece; in general, they are less than a third of the weight of my usual work.

Tin and Timber 2020
This project transported me back to my childhood running barefoot through the long grass on my family’s orchard collecting stones, tiny windblown birds’ nests and other earthly treasures, before bringing them back to a pint sized workbench next to my father’s in the garage.
I had a fascination with the nostalgic, especially old tins, and kept my precious findings in them. Moa stones and chunks of Kauri gum my father had found, bird’s feathers and broken eggs, sea shells and other bits I’d collected ended up in these tins.
In this project I have endeavoured to recreate a small sacred moment with each assemblage of treasure inside these tins. I hope that the new guardians of these treasures will also create a little space to enjoy them as I have done in their creation.

These folded pieces are a representation of celebration. The process is quite meditative and the abstract painting is a delightful process before it is then transformed into a necklace that is large and stands out almost like a trophy necklace, begging for conversation.
I love to wear these pieces when I’m celebrating something special and the more discrete silver folded pieces when I’m quietly stoked. They remind me to celebrate the small things and we could all do with a bit of that at the moment.

This series is a continuation of my interest in examining and upending the functionalities of jewellery. By bringing earring hooks and butterflies to the front I ask the viewer to consider what is often overlooked or accepted as normal by default. I am intrigued by small details, the unseen and disrupting the order of things.
