"I excavate small moments in time, capturing these through the jewellery and objects I make.
The often overlooked elements within the streetscape are my muse: buffed walls, wet cement scrawling, fragments and objects left behind in the rush. An exploration of the marks we make. And the mark we make. The biography of these objects, materials and spaces are what interests me. Uncovering and adding to the mostly anonymous and constantly evolving stories they collect." "Do we brush off beauty in a 5 second glance but pause to be interested in the ugly.
Is ugly becoming the trend, and is it becoming tasteful?
We are all designed to enjoy beauty. It is seductive , predictable, soothing rather than challenging ugly- variety, stimulated, disturbing. Beauty and ugly are not opposites but aspects of the same thing. However defined - beauty is not necessarily attractive and ugliness is not always repulsive.
Taste changes back and forth erasing aesthetic certainties.
To much beauty would be an overload we could not indulge in the deliciousness of beauty if we do not have an active concept of ugliness.
Does too much ugliness affect its value in the contemporary jewellery world and commercial world. Beauty in the design world is about function, visibility, integrity, form and function. This type of jewellery is often mass produced and worn as a signifier for nostalgia, e.g. classic wedding ring.
I am very interested in my practice looking at how far you can push both these elements. The dualism of beautiful and ugly. Each aesthetic category is not merely descriptive, the experience of the sublime brings the mind into a state of tension and relaxation."

"Using the age-old materials and techniques of leather, wood, binding, and hand painting Nik revisits
the methods, reshapes them, and brings them into a modern context.
After studying Sociology and Psychology Nik worked for a number of years in a variety of Media
industries before following her passion for jewellery. Her background in the social sciences is evident
in her work which explores the themes associated with these disciplines.
In 2015 she completed a Bachelor of Applied Arts majoring in Contemporary Jewellery from Whitireia
NZ, received the Fingers Gallery Graduate Award and won the ECC / Dowse student Craft/Design

"I am interested in a glass as a material. By immersing myself in the process of working with glass I become aware of the tradition of glass working and of the skill required, which further heightens my interest.
By working with glass using an oxygen-operated flame, as has been common in this field for many centuries, I am engaging with a long tradition, but bringing both the material and the traditional process of working it into a new context. During the work process, I learn how the glass reacts to different types of flame and to the hand movement. The novelty of this process drives my curiosity and becomes the basis for the resulting forms.
I hope that just as the hot liquid glass demands from me certain kind of awareness, attention and a feeling of movement, so the finished jewellery object might also provoke this from its wearer. The function and wearability of my pieces are an essential part of my work."

"These pieces represent an exploration of materials I began to experiment with during my first year as a jewellery student. They are materials that I continually return to and as such they represent to me the circular nature of the creative process. Familiarity may breed contempt but sometimes it provides a safe haven from which I can move forward."
